Today, California’s governor delivers his delayed State of the State speech. Keep up with his catchphrases with CalMatters’ trademark game.

If it’s another big speech by Gov. Gavin Newsom, then it must be time for CalMatters’ Newsom lingo bingo.

This is our third edition because, you know, our governor comes up with new turns of phrase — whether or not they’re used in everyday conversation.

Today, he’s set to deliver his State of the State speech, though it’s three months late, is pre-recorded and will be posted online.

He and legislative leaders just announced a state budget deal. So don’t be surprised if plenty of financial terms are sprinkled throughout. (Our ears perked up when, during his January budget reveal, Newsom said: “I know this is on your bingo cards, so I’m going to make it easy: Localism is determinative.”)

Newsom also likes to brag on California and diss Florida and other Republican-led states. Expect some mention of “rights regression” and other criticisms as well.

And it’s a presidential election year, and Newsom has enthusiastically taken on the role of cheerleader and defender for President Joe Biden. Listen for that political language, too.

So get ready for Newsom’s high-stakes budget unveiling by printing out or saving the CalMatters bingo card — but to play along, you’ll have to watch the governor’s presentation on his XFacebook or YouTube pages
