Erika recently graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a B.A. in journalism. During her time at CSULB, she worked as the senior print editor and writer for the school magazine, DIG MAG. Prior to graduating, Erika spent almost 9 years working in the banking industry. As a first-generation California native, she aims to use her experience to report on underrepresented communities throughout the state. Erika currently resides in Long Beach, California.

How sports arenas became the poster child of California’s housing crisis
To help alleviate the state’s housing shortage, California recently began tracking publicly owned lots that could be turned into affordable homes. In its first year, the state housing agency has cited two major sports arenas—Angel Stadium in Anaheim and Pechanga Arena in San Diego—for cutting backroom development deals with developers that shortchanged the public on affordable units. The agency is now investigating Oakland Coliseum in Oakland.

Payday loans dropped during pandemic, but Californians are ‘not out of the woods’
A new report found a dramatic decrease in Californians’ reliance on payday loans as a direct result of pandemic-related government assistance, including unemployment benefits, rent relief, eviction moratoriums, stimulus checks and loan forbearance. But experts warn that use of payday loans is expected to rebound once government assistance ends.

California’s high cost of housing and child care are creating such a burden on working families that millions of households don’t make enough to meet their most basic necessities. The United Ways of California, which put out the study, advocates for expanding eligibility so assistance doesn’t fall off just as families attain economic stability.
